¿Dónde?

So where am I studying? Here’s more info on the wonderful city of Seville:

Sevilla, España

Seville is the capital of the autonomous community of Andalucia and is the 4th largest city in Spain with a population of just over 700,000. It is nestled along the Guadalquivir River, the second longest  and only great navigable river in Spain. The climate is closer to that of New Orleans than of Philadelphia, with average annual temperatures of 25 °C (77 °F) in the daytime and 13 °C (55 °F) at night.

The culture of Seville is vibrant, especially when it comes to food, music, and nightlife. There is a thriving tapas scene, with sevillanos (the inhabitants of the city) often frequenting several bars/restaurants in one night, enjoying small dishes called tapas at each establishment. In terms of music, Seville is well known for its flamenco music and dance. The frilly, voluminous dresses often associated with this form of music and dance can be seen during the Feria festivities held each April. And as for nightlife, the pleasant climate and sociability of sevillanos has fostered a diverse array of restaurants and clubs, where locals often spend hours outside talking and eating before frequenting many of the clubs around the city’s center. Seville is also home to the famous Spanish sport of bullfighting.

When speaking of Seville, several well known historical sites and monuments are frequently mentioned, including:

Torre del Oro, Sevilla

  • Torre del Oro (the gold tower)- built by the Almohad dynasty as a watchtower and barrier along the Guadalquivir River
  • Plaza de España– located in Maria Luisa Park (Parque de Maria Luisa), the plaza was built by the architect Aníbal González for the 1929 Exposición Ibero-Americana an is an outstanding example of Regionalist Revival Architecture, a bizarre and loftily conceived mixture of diverse historic styles; today the plaza primarily features government buildings, such as the Seville Town Hall, and is a popular tourist destination
  • The Alcázar– the royal palace of Seville that faces the Cathedral of St. Mary and that was originally a Moorish fort
